A Day in the Life of a CamdenBoss Apprentice

Stephen, an apprentice in the machine shop, shared what a typical day looks like for him:

• Starting with a Gemba meeting to discuss daily tasks and priorities.

• Conducting safety checks and setting up machines for production.

• Working on customised enclosures and ensuring precision in every task.

• Taking on additional responsibilities like being the 5’s champion in the CNC area, where he helps maintain organization and efficiency.

For Jay, an apprentice in Continuous Improvement (CI), no two days are the same. His role involves:

• Working on projects that improve processes and equipment across the company.

• Learning from experienced colleagues and applying new skills to real-world challenges.

• Collaborating with the CI team to find innovative solutions that make a tangible impact.

Both Stephen and Jay emphasise the hands-on nature of their roles and the satisfaction of seeing their work contribute to the company’s success.

Skills and Confidence: The Unexpected Benefits

One of the most rewarding aspects of an apprenticeship is the personal and professional growth that comes with it.

Stephen shared that his confidence has grown significantly since starting his apprenticeship. He’s also gained valuable certifications, including becoming a first aider, manual handling teacher, and evacuation chair trainer.

Jay highlighted the importance of learning from others. He’s discovered how to leverage the unique skills and perspectives of his colleagues to tackle challenges creatively. This collaborative environment has not only expanded his technical knowledge but also his problem-solving abilities.

When asked about their proudest moments, both apprentices shared inspiring stories.

For Stephen, leading a project for the first time was a major milestone. It helped him build leadership skills and boosted his confidence. He also takes pride in teaching his peers about manual handling and maintaining high standards in the CNC area.

Jay’s proudest achievement was completing a project that halved the time it takes to insert parts using a self-inserting machine. This innovation not only improved efficiency but also gave him a sense of accomplishment and the confidence to take on more complex projects.
